چکیده

The Hα luminosity density of galaxies is used to calculate the local diffuse radiation field at the Lyman limit as resulting from star formation in the universe. The fraction of Lyman continuum radiation leaking out from galaxies through their neutral hydrogen is the most uncertain parameter of the calculation. A comparison of the diffuse radiation predicted from galaxies with that measured from all sources of ionization shows that the average Lyman continuum escape fraction should be lower than 1%. This number is lower than the upper limits reported so far in a few objects. It is also shown that the luminosity density at the Lyman limit resulting from star formation is consistent with the luminosity density and the diffuse background measured in the far (non-ionizing) ultraviolet.

CONTINUUM EMISSION FROM GALAXIES AT z ≃ 3

We report the detection of significant Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of 29 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with redshifts 〈z〉 = 3.40 ± 0.09. After correction for opacity due to intervening absorption using a new composite QSO spectrum evaluated at the same redshift, the ratio of emergent flux density at 1500 Å in the rest frame to that in the Lyman continuum is L(1500)/L(900) = 4.6...

The Direct Detection of Lyman-continuum Emission from Star-forming Galaxies

We present the results of rest-frame ultraviolet spectroscopic observations of a sample of 14 z ∼ 3 star-forming galaxies in the SSA22a field. These spectra are characterized by unprecedented depth in the Lyman-continuum region. For the first time, we have detected escaping ionizing radiation from individual galaxies at high redshift, with two of the 14 objects showing significant emission belo...

Lyman “bump” galaxies - I. Spectral energy distribution of galaxies with an escape of nebular Lyman continuum

It is essential to know galactic emissivity and spectrum of Lyman continuum (LyC) in order to understand the cosmic reionization. Here we consider an escape of nebular LyC from galaxies and examine the consequent spectral energy distribution. It is usually assumed that hydrogen nebular LyC mostly produced by bound-free transitions is consumed within photo-ionized nebulae (so-called “on-the-spot...

An HST Search for Lyman Continuum Emission From Galaxies at 1 . 1 < z < 1 . 4

If enough of their Lyman limit continuum escapes, star-forming galaxies could be significant contributors to the cosmic background of ionizing photons. To investigate this possibility, we obtained the first deep imaging in the far ultraviolet of eleven bright blue galaxies at intermediate redshift (1.1 < z < 1.4) with the STIS FUV MAMA detector on the Hubble Space Telescope. No Lyman continuum ...

Upper limit on Lyman continuum flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3 using VLT narrow - band photometry ⋆

We have performed narrow-band imaging observations with the Very Large Telescope, aimed at detecting the Lyman continuum (LC) flux escaping from galaxies at z ∼ 3. We do not find any significant LC flux from our sample of two galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field South, at z = 3.170 and 3.275. The corresponding lower limits on the F1400/F900 flux density (per Hz) ratio are 15.6 and 10.2 (3-σ confid...
